    New Here

    Hello all,

I'm coming to this forum from a weird place. I made my way through pre-calc in high school, but never really learned very much. My expectation was to go into some sort of social science, so I thought I wouldn't need math. Now, however, I've decided to go into computer science for my degree and have a sudden interest in math. I'm taking pre-calculus this semester and am finding it very challenging and frustrating and so I expect to be posting here a lot.

One question I have is about writing equations, is there a way to format equations using the forums or is it necessary to generate a picture externally and then upload it?

First of all, welcome to MHF! I'm also glad you've taken a sudden interest in math; a lot of the interesting stuff is learned mostly in university in my opinion, and I think a lot of people miss out.

There is a way to format equations using LaTex and if you're unfamiliar, you only need to look at codes online.

    Re: New Here

Hey. I joined this form about five years ago with the intention of helping others out. A few months in, Moderator "Moo" suggested learning LaTeX so my responses stopped looking like this: (4x^(2/(n-3)))/4. A turning point in my math career, right there.

In graduate school, I LaTeXed every single problem set, paper and take-home exam. My professors loved grading my work, and told me so. Eventually they were inviting me to drink with them.

Bottom line: Your professors will love you. You will pants every single one of your classmates when it comes to presentations. You will be able to communicate mathematically anywhere. When your professor says, "one one-sided sheet of notes," you will dominate. I had the professors' blessing to write review sheets and sell them. I authored our program's Comprehensive Examination Solution Manual. I bring copies of my work to interviews. People like you more. You become a better person.
