Convert each to an improper fraction.
Get a common denominator.
Add the numerators.
Write as a mixed number.

Another approach:

$2\frac{1}{4}+5\frac{5}{6}=2+\frac{1}{4}+6-\frac{1}{6}=8+\frac{3}{12}-\frac{2}{12}=8+\frac{1}{12}=8\frac{1}{12}$
