One day in the country Dad said he had seen six creatures in a group that had 20 legs between them. The creatures were cows and birds. How many birds were there in the group that he saw?

2 birds. 4 legs of those birds, and then the rest 4 legs of the cows, 16+4=20, and six creatures.
how do u know that there is 4 cows to begin with. is the only way trial and error?

This problem is traditionally solved using algebra - simultaneous equations to be exact. Is that what you are studying atm?
No im just studying basic maths equations for a military aptitude test
