1. Percentages and Fractions Help!

Participants in the local soccer league this year is 10% greater than it was last year. The number of males increased by 5%, and the number of females increased by 20%. What fraction of the soccer league is now female?

I just can't seem to get this problem started....

2. Re: Percentages and Fractions Help!

m + f = number of participants last year

1.1(m + f) = number of participants this year

1.05m + 1.2f = also the number of participants this year

so ... what now?

3. Re: Percentages and Fractions Help!

we substitute?

1.05m + 1.2f = 1.1(m + f)
then I divided
(21/22)m + (24/22)f = m + f

4. Re: Percentages and Fractions Help!

OK, solve your last equation for m in terms of f.

then remember what you're trying to find ... the fraction of the league that is female

5. Re: Percentages and Fractions Help!

solving for m I get:

(1/11)f = 1/22 m
2f = m

Okay, so 1/3 of the participants are female.

Holy cow, that was so simple. Ive been working on it all day...and thinking too hard about it. haha
Thank you so much!
