Long division
Please could somebody tell me how you work out 119/140 using long division,

Thanks:)

Re: Long division
Unfortunately, I dont know how to show a long division, keeping all digits positioned correctly, so the best I can do is "talk" about it. Since 119 is less than 140, of course, the quotient will be less than 1. So we write a "." and add a 0: 119.0 and divide 140 into 1190. After,perhaps, a little trial division we see that 8*140= 1120 and 1190- 1120= 70< 119. That is, the first decimal place in the quotient is .8 and the remainder is 70. Bringing down a 0, we now want to divide 140 into 700. It turns out that 5*(140)= 700 exactly so 140 divides into 119 exactly .85 times. More commonly, we never get a remainder of 0 so we just keep dividing getting an infinite (though repeating) decimal.

Re: Long division
140 > 119, so 140 goes into 119 0 times. so our first step is:

119 = (0)(140) + 119 <---quotient of 0, remainder of 119.

in "long-hand form":

..........0
....._______
140|119
.........0
.....--------
..... 119

next, we divide 119.0 by 140...but what we are really doing to do is divide 1190 by 140, and divide the quotient and remainder by 10:

1190 = (8)(140) + 70 <---quotient of 8, remainder of 70

119.0 = (0.8)(140) + 7.0

in "long-form":

..........0.8
....._______
140|119.0
.........0.0
.....--------
..... 119.0
......112.0
.....--------
........7.0

next we are going to divide 7.0 by 140, but again, what we are really going to do is divide 700 by 140 and divide the quotient and remainder by 100:

700 = (5)(140) + 0 <---division ends

7.0 = (0.05)(140) + 0.00

putting this all together, we get:

119 = (0.8)(140) + 7.0 = (0.8)(140) + (0.05)(140) = (0.8 + 0.05)(140) = (0.85)(140) so

119/140 = 0.85

in "long-form":

..........0.85
....._______
140|119.00
.........0.00
.....--------
..... 119.00
......112.00
.....--------
........7.00
........7.00
.....--------
........0.00
