Will I ever use this stuff?

I get this question a lot. Students ask me, "When will I ever use this stuff?", meaning mathematics. Or, what is even more irritating, "What vocation can I go into where no math is involved?"

This site addresses the first question. When I answer the second question, I sometimes refer to 'deep frying chicken' or 'riding on the back of a garbage truck', but I'm not sure those vocations are entirely 'math free'. They probably need to know that the placement of the decimal point in their paycheck amount is important.

They might as well kill themselves then. Unless they want to live on the street for the rest of their life, they will be using math in their day-to-day duties.
