# Math Help - Help with calculating a download speed

1. ## Help with calculating a download speed

Hi everybody

I'm trying to calculate a download speed for a homework assignment and I'm struggling a bit. I'm not asking for anybody to answer the question for me, I would just like somebody to explain what I need to do in order to work it out. The question I am struggling with is:

If you have an internet connection with a download speed of 4135 kilobytes per second, how long would it take to download a 124 kilobyte file?

I know the answer is obviously less than one second, but I am unsure about how to accurately calculate how many milliseconds it would take. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

$t = \frac{124 \, kb}{4135 \, kb/s} = 0.029987... \, s \, \approx 30 \, ms$

3. ## Re: Help with calculating a download speed

Using the formula total = rate $\times$ time, or time = total $\div$ rate, you see how skeeter's method works.

Skeeter & MarkFL2 - Thanks so much for your quick replies and for explaining this to me, it makes sense to me now
