I am a math teacher and spend a lot of my time marking and planning classes. I'd be interested to hear what tricks people here use to speed up their work or to save time. Thanks! (Happy)

In grading papers and exams, first off make a key - alot points (or marks) to what parts of the question you want, i.e 1 point for this, 2 points for this, etc. Then grade each question separately. All of the papers, question 1 (or 1 and 2 if they're on the same page), all of the papers, question 2, and so on. Top to bottom, bottom to top. This should make you somewhat consistent. Also, you'll be able to see where student's go wrong and be able to deduce very quickly where each papers' problem has error (if any).

Although very time consuming, I find this helps speed up the process.

Thank you for the advice, it maybe time consuming at first but I am sure it would be one of the ways that I could probably hold on to speed up the process and would save my time. :) Keep in touch!

For homework I just grade on effort. Philosophically this makes sense to me. Homework is a practice opportunity and it doesn't make sense to grade right and wrong during the practice of a skill one has not mastered yet. This allows me to do a quick check to make sure students have shown the appropriate work. We go over the homework in class and look to answer any questions necessary.

I also find a self paced approach more appropriate for both students and teacher time wise. But this requires a lot of front loaded work.

Practice, It's the only key to be perfect in maths as we know maths require more practice than other subjects so you should work hard with it's problem as well as you will find some Free Math Tutor websites on internet where you can understand new maths tricks.

With multiple choice tests, have the students mark their answers on a multiple choice answer sheet, and create a stencil with the correct answer cut out of each question on it. Put it over the top of the students' test pages, immediately you know which ones weren't answered correctly :)
