I don't know if I've recalled this from something thats been said to me by somebody else, and it may of already been thought of. But yesterday I was sitting in maths (I'm 15) and my teacher said "remember, the x axis is the one that goes across" because a lot of people in my class forget what is what. So I thought.

x axis is the horizontal line
y axis is the vertical line
do you answer crossword puzzles? it is across and down
across is the horizontal one

Easy way to remember the axis
This is not always true. eg. You might have to draw a graph of x = 3t +1, in which case the x-axis is the vertical axis.

It's only true for the xy-plane.
