i can't seem to figure out how to convert FAB4 base 16 to octal. is there a step in between that i need to do? any help is greatly appreciated.

Convert $FAB4_{16}$ to octal.
There is a trick we can use . . .

We know that: . $FAB4_{16} \;=\;[15]\,[10]\,[11]\,[4]$

Convert to binary: . $[1111]\,[1010]\,[1011]\,[0100]$

Remove the brackets: . $1111101010110100$

Regroup "by threes": . $[1]\,[111]\,[101]\,[010]\,[110]\,[100]$

Covert to octal: . . . . . $1\quad7\quad\;\;\:5\quad\;\;2\quad\;\;\;6\quad\;\; 4$

Answer: . $175264_8$
