    Equations with parentheses: Word problem skills

    Maria, Amy and Sadie share food costs. Amy pays $10 a month less then Maria. Sadie pays twice as much as Amy. If the monthly food bill is $310, which equation can be used to find Maria's share (m)?

    Can anyone help me to put this equation together?

    m = amount Maria pays

    m - 10 = amount Amy pays

    2(m - 10) = amount Sadie pays

    $310 = total for all three

    \boxed{m + m - 10 + 2(m - 10) = 310}
