1. Word Problem need help urgent

A priest has a very specific ritual for climbing up the steps to the church. First he climbs up to the middle step and meditates for 1 minute. Then he climbs up 8 steps and faces east until he hears a bird singing. Then he walks down 12 steps and picks up a pebble. He takes one step up and tosses the pebble over his left shoulder. Now, he walks up the remaining steps three at a time which only takes him 9 paces. How many steps are there?

2. Rule #1 - Name Stuff.

n = total number of steps.

Phase 1: On Step (n+1)/2

That fact that there IS a middle step suggests an odd number of steps.

Phase 2: +8

Phase 3: -12

Phase 4: +1

Phase 5: + 27 on Step (n+1)/2 + 24 Since this is the top of the stairs.

(n+1)/2 + 24 = n

Solve for n.

This whole problem hinges on that clear and consice definitions up front. We can then focus on the clues without wondering what it is we are talking about.

Some priest.
I bet no other priest joined his congregation anymore when they were told to follow that ritual as part of their meditation. (What if the priests suffer vertigo? After climbing up and down, they might not know which one is left from right anymore. One mistake on the ritual and a priest would be dismissed?)

Let x = number of steps.

x/2 +8 -12 +1 +3(9) = x
x/2 = 24
x = 48 steps total ------------answer.

4. I'm still wondering who keeps putting the pebbles on the stairs.
