I believe this is the equation you are looking for:

2m*3 = 5m - 3/4

6m=5m-3/4

m=-3/4

Hope this helps. - Sep 1st 2008, 01:28 PMSoroban
Hello, FiyWonOhh!

If we're careful, we can translate the words*directly*into Algebra.

Quote:

The product of twice a number and 3 is the same as the difference of 5 times the number and 3/4.

Find the number.

Let $\displaystyle x$ = the number.

$\displaystyle \underbrace{\text{ product of twice a number and 3 }}\;\underbrace{\text{ is the same as }}$ $\displaystyle \underbrace{\text{ the difference of 5 times the number and 3/4 }}$

. . . . . . . .$\displaystyle (2x)\cdot 3$. . . . . . . . . . . . . .$\displaystyle = $ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .$\displaystyle 5x \;- \;\frac{3}{4}$

And there is our equation! $\displaystyle \hdots\quad 6x \;=\;5x - \frac{3}{4}$
