just combine like terms in the [brackets] ...
[(x - 3) - 5] = [x - 3 - 5] = [x - 8]
[(x - 3) + 5] = [x - 3 + 5] = [x + 2]
Why didn't I think of it before!! Well...mmm I thought about it but then doubted
