    word problem

    Central park is a rectangle with an area of 840 acres. It is 1/2 a mile wide. One acre is 43,560 square feet. Two people start at the south-west corner at 1:30 pm and start walking round the park in opposite directions. One walks at 9 mph the other walks at 2 mph. How long until they meet again?. A mile is 5280 feet.

    The park is 2640 feet wide. It is (43560)(840)=36,590,400 square feet.

    That means the length is 13,860 feet.

    The perimeter is 2(13860)+2(2640)=33,000 feet or 6.25 miles.

    Sinc eht ewalkers are heading toward one another around the park, their cumulative speed is 11 mph.

    Since d=rt, $\displaystyle \frac{6.25}{11}=\frac{25}{44}=.56\overline{81}$

    Multiply by 60 and we find it takes a little over 34 minutes.
