Dear forum members,
I am having a problem with hybridizing the oxygen atom.
The electron configuration for oxygen is 1s2,2s2, 2px2, 2py1,2p1, right?
Then if two oxygen atoms are to make a bond with carbon dioxide, how does the oxygen hybridize? Is it sp2 hybridization? I would think it would be sp hybridization, but then all of the p-oribitals would be filled, and there would be no room for the pi-bonds. Or can a full p-orbital make a pi-bond?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you in adavance!
