Hi all,
got this from my 8 year olds home work and it has got me stumped.
what is the next number in this sequence:
40, 112, 459, 1000...
any help appreciated
That looks very strange for a fourth grade assignment! My first thought was that perhaps each number is the previous number plus a fixed amount but that is not true. My second thought was that perhaps each number is the previous number times a fixed number but that also is not true. Now, it happens to be true that, given any n numbers there exist an n-1 degree polynomial that gives those number for x= 0, 1, 2, ..., n-1 but I wouldn't expect an 8 year old to understand any of that!
