Simple question - need an explaination

Hello,

I been working through a set of excrise and I hit the problem

7/12 = ?%

And this is now it gets solved

=> 7/12 * 100

=> 700/12

=> 58 * 12 + 4 / 12

=> 58 4/12%

=> 58 1/3%

I see how its worked out, but however what I dont understand is this ( 58 * 12 + 4) / 12. Looking at it I can understand how 58 * 12 got derived. 700/12 will give 58.3. Following that the 12 in the numertor disappeares. I need to understand how? The only way i can think of doing that is striking of 12 from both numerator as well as in the denominator. But doing that it wont derive me 58 4/12%

I know its a simple question. I'm sure I would get an answer to it :)

Thanks!

Re: Simple question - need an explaination

Hey ssharish.

Basically what they have is factor 700 into 12. Doing so gives 700/12 = 58 remainder 4 or in other words: 700 = 58*12 + 4.

Doing a substitution we get:

700/12 = (58*12 + 4)/12 = 58 + 4/12.

Re: Simple question - need an explaination

Chiro,

Thanks very much for the reply. I undertstand the substitution part.

(58*12 + 4) / 12

How does this gets simplified so easily to

=> 58 4/12? This is what I dont understand.

Re: Simple question - need an explaination

Basically it uses the rule that (a+b)/d = a/d + b/d.
