Thread: Can anyone help me to 'show' the average

I have a question on an assignment that has got me beat. It is to do with the disintegration of an ice shelf, which was 14,000 km^2 at the beginning of march, and disintegrated to 2000 km^2 by the end of November. The question says given there are 275 days in a year show that average rate of disintegration is 7.3 km^2 day^-1.

Cant work this out, I thought the average is the same as the 'mean'? If I attempt to calculate the mean from the information given I get something very different than 7.3 km^2 day^-1.

Can anyone give me some advice?

there is decompositin of 14000 - 2000 = 12000 km^2 in nine months in 275 days so what wiil be the disintegration per day, it wiil be 12000/275 km^2 per day

That is what I thought. But that works out at 43.63636363... But the questions says show that the rate is 7.3 km^2 day^-1, not show that it is 43.63 ect. This is why i am lost!

Are these March and November of the same year? What year is given?
