Clairifcation on basic math for a friend of mine
I was chatting to a friend the other day and they didn't agree with my statement B below, if you assume that 500 votes are available, and two people get 200 and 300 votes respectivly. Where there are only two candidates.
A) There a the split in votes of 40/60%
As far as im concerned we have
500 * 0.60 (60%) == 300 VOTES (being 60% is 300 votes)
and 500 *0.40 (40%) == 200 VOTES (etc)
B) The second person have 50% more than the first person
because 200 * 0.50 (50%) = 100 + 200 =300
or 1.5 * 200 (150% of 200) =300
However although some of my freinds agree with me, others don't. Naturally I feel im correct in stating A and B, but would appreciate some feedback. I am wrong I will have to do some GCSE maths courses, if not hopefully it will clarify things for my friends.
Many thanks
Russell
Re: Clairifcation on basic math for a friend of mine
Therefore my reasoning is this.
it’s true to say that 20% of 500 votes is 100 votes
… and that the difference of 200 and 300 is 100
… and in respect to a total of 500 votes (not 300 or 200) there is 20% difference between the two based on total available votes because 20% of 500 is 100.
It’s true to say that 300 is 60% of 500 votes and that 200 is 40% of 500 votes.
It’s true to say that 200 * 20% = 240
It’s true to say that 200 * 50% = 300
It’s true to say in this example that 300 votes versus 200 votes means that 300 votes is 50% more than 200 votes.
Mathematically these are all correct (I hope!!!) lol. The difference in votes between the two based on a total of 500 votes would be 20%. But 300 is still 50% more than 200 votes.
