# Math Help - How do I divide Decimals?

1. ## How do I divide Decimals?

For example:

30.72
÷ 9.60

and

22.0
÷ 2.0
and
 2.7 ÷ 0.9

You don't have to answer all three, just pick one or do all three if you want, would appreciate that. Just need a simple explanation on how to divide decimals.

3. ## Re: How do I divide Decimals?

22.0÷ 2.0=11.0

what is 11.0*2=???

Not really sure what your getting at there, I mean, that requires too much thinking when it's not needed.

I know what I'm doing now, thanks though.

6. ## Re: How do I divide Decimals?

He's basically asking, what is 11x2?

7. ## Re: How do I divide Decimals?

You can multiply the decimal out of the numerator and denominator. For example:

$\frac {30.72}{9.6} \cdot \frac{100}{100} = \frac {3072}{960}\ from\ which\ simplifies\ to\ \frac{16}{5} = 3.2$

8. ## Re: How do I divide Decimals?

I thought trailing zeros after the decimal place counts as a significant digit? So 9.60 would be 3 significant digits which means the answer is 3.20? Or is this not correct

9. ## Re: How do I divide Decimals?

Don't forget, the right hand side of the decimal point is the fractional part. So 0.2 is equal to $2 \times 10^{-1}$. Which is also equal to 0.20, from which can also be regarded as $\frac{1}{5}.$ 20/100 simplifies to 1/5.
