Is this the best way to divide?

    For example, 33/454

    33
    454

You ask yourself, how many times 33 goes into 4 it doesn't so you move onto 45 and it goes in once with 12 remainder, so you put the 12 remainder on top of the last 4 so it becomes 124, how many times does 33 go into 124, it goes in 3 times with 22 remainder so now I'M GOING CRAZY.

I need some help here please; I'm trying to figure out a quick and easy way to write out short-long divisions, I've saw one technique that leaves you like

(Not correct calculations, just showing you the extent of how far down it ends up)203
    34
    24
    342
    3242
    32423
    2342432
    3244

I need something that I can use which is simplier and faster due to the test I'm taking I'll have very short amount of time to make calculations, so any help would be most welcome.

    Kind regards, SM.

    What about long division?
There are some methods to speed it up a bit, with the downside of increased complexity.

For example, guesswork with positive and negative remainders:
    454-330=124=~3*45.4

    Try 0.07:
    0.07*454 = 45.4-3*4.54 = 45.4-13.62=31.78
    33-31.78=1.22 remainder

    1220 =~ 3*454=1362
Use 0.073 as next estimate, the remainder is -.142
    -1420 =~ -3*454=-1362
Use 0.0727 as next estimate, the remainder is -0.0058
Use 0.07269 as next estimate, the remainder is -0.00126

These are already 4 significant figures. I doubt that you ever need them, if you are not allowed to use a calculator.

Are you getting confused as to which number is dividing into which? You way that you want to divide 33 by 54 so how many times "33" divides into "45" is irrelevant. To find a trial divisor, you should be thinking about how many times 45 will divide into 330.

so you put the 12 remainder on top of the last 4 so it becomes 124, how many times does 33 go into 124, it goes in 3 times with 22 remainder so now I'M GOING CRAZY.
