Thread: Calculating average rate is this a typo ?

1. Calculating average rate is this a typo ?

The question is (it seems pretty straightforward to me)
A train travels from point A to point Bin 46 minutes.If the distance between two points is 59.8 miles. What is the average rate of of train in miles per hour ?
The book says answer is 46 and my answer is 78..
Here is how i did it ...
46 min = 46/60=23/30 hrs
S=59.8
S/t = v
so
(59.8x30)/23 =78 Ans

2. Re: Calculating average rate is this a typo ?

you can check your own answer ...

$\displaystyle 78 \, miles/hr \times \frac{46}{60} \, hr = ?$

... you really need to start doing this instead of getting confirmation from someone else.

Thanks for the pointer ..

Perhaps you are misreading the book. If the speed were 46 mi/hr then in 46 min (less than one hour) the train could not have gone more than 46 miles. Either you are the person who wrote the book are confusing the time with the speed.
