Can someone please give an example on how to solve a y=mx+b problem

With regards to what?

With regards to m:

$\displaystyle

y = mx + b

$

$\displaystyle

m = -\frac{b}{x}

$

With regards to x:

$\displaystyle

y = mx + b

$

$\displaystyle

x = -\frac{b}{m}

$

With regards to b:

$\displaystyle

y = mx + b

$

$\displaystyle

b = -mx

$

Was that what you meant? If you meant something else, you have to specify... Pretty standard algebra... ;) - Feb 15th 2006, 03:39 AMctelady

What is the equation of a line with slope 2 through point (4.6)?

y = mx+b Plug in the slope instead of m along with the x and y values of the point -->

6 = 2(4) +b Solve for b -->

6 = 8 +b

b = -2

Re-write the format, including the values of m and b -->

y = 2x -2
