If I recall it right, the rule is, when you subtract, you change the sign of this thing you are subtracting, then you add the changed-sign thing to the amount you are subtracting from.

So, you are subtracting +1017. Then, change its sign, from originally positive to negative now.----->>> -1017.
Then add that -1017 to -282.
I bet you know how to add two negative numbers.

If the signs are the same, replace with +
If the signs are different, replace with -
so -282-1017
For adding/subtracting, when the signs are the same, add the #s and keep the sign the same.
