    Mint, Chips and Nosh

    Yolanda’s Yummy Ice Cream Shoppe was giving away samples of new flavors: yum yum mint, choco chips, and nutty nosh. Forty-five people had mint, 56 had nosh, and 63 had chips. Eighteen people sampled both mint and nosh, 26 tasted chips and nosh, and 20 had chips and mint. Eight very brave people sampled all three. How many people tried the new flavor?

    How many people tried a new flavor?
    This can be solved with a Venn diagram, but we also have a formula:

    n( M U N U C) .= .n(M) + n(N) + n(C) - n(M ∩ N) - n(N ∩ C) - n(M ∩ C) + n(M ∩ N ∩ C)


    So we have: .n(M U N U C) .= .45 + 56 + 63 - 18 - 26 - 20 + 8 .= .108
