# Thread: Decimal to Irrational Fraction

1. ## Decimal to Irrational Fraction

I was wanting to know how I can use the graphing calculator to take a decimal and change it into an irrational fraction. Is there some sort of setup I can use...Thanks!

Ummm...what is an "irrational" fraction?

You don't really need to make the calculator do it, but if you want to try what I would suggest is to put the calcuator into "exact" mode, then enter your decimal, followed by "enter." It should give you back a fraction. The problem is that if you put in 0.333333 you will get back:
$\frac{333333}{1000000}$

There's no way I know of to get around the problem of repeating decimals.

There is a way to find a repeating decimal.
And I also found a way how find find decimals for irrationals of the form,
$\frac{a+\sqrt{b}}{c}$
But it might be too advanced it involves continued fractions and solving quadradic equations.
