Physics Discussion: Jumping from a 10m Diving Tower onto a Newspaper
I had this discussion with a few of my friends and we seem to have very different opinions about this situation. The scenario is this: You jump off a 10m high diving tower into a pool, but there is a newspaper on the surface of the water. Now lets assume the newspaper is just not 1 sheet of paper but a whole newspaper, say 20-25 pages. But, I think it will be a similar result if its even just a couple of sheets. Say you also weigh 100kg to make the math easier. I'm saying that the force of you hitting the newspaper on top of the water will be high enough to break your leg at least, if not hurt you even more. Everyone seems to disagree, and is saying that the newspaper will simply crumble and give way without you even feeling it.
The physic calculations I have done and thought of seem to imply that the force will be great, and substantial enough to do lots of damage.
What do you guys think about this situation?
