    Find Larger Number

    Two numbers are in the ratio 2:5. If 6 is subtracted from
    their sum, the result is 50. What is the larger number?

    Let the larger number be x and the smaller y.

    They are in the ratio 2:5 so:

    y/x=2/5.

    The second condition tell us that:

    x+y-6=50.

    From the first equation y=2x/5, which we substitute into the equation above:

    x+2x/5=50,

    or:

    7x/5=50

    7x=250

    x=250/7.
