Thread: Newbie to Maple - Error when factoring

I'm in document mode, I typed:
factor(4*x^5+12^4+9*x^3)

and it gave me:
4*x^5+20736+9*x^3

How do I make it factor that properly?

Also, when I type in an exponent...the next character starts from the exponent indentation...how to I move one level down? Like if I type 4x^4....the next character starts from ^4 indentation, I want it to start at 4x indentation.

EDIT:
More questions....When I use the "Precalculus - Polynomials and Roots tool" and enter "2x^5 + 3x^3 + 7" for define polynomial, it complains that "The input value should be a polynomial in x (with real number coefficients)"

Maybe it just can't factor it anymore. It just might be the correct answer
