Thread: Beginner Help with Wolfram Mathematica pl!

I write code at Mathematica 6 kernel; my OS is Vista.
When I write an input such that the output is supposed to be in graphics, (like plotting a graph, etc), it inevitably says: -Graphics- and just stops at that. What can I do that it displays graphics?

2nd question:
Also, I can't seem to work at .nb (notebook) when I boot Mathematica by clicking on the Mathematica icon in the start menu. It's when I boot Mathematica by clicking at the Mathematica 6 Kernel icon that I am able to give input. It says,
You are running in a mode which does not allow editing. Contact Wolfram Research (Wolfram Research--Makers of Mathematica; Leaders in Computation) about enabling additional capabilities.

Also, I ain't able to do anything when I go to Help>Internet connectivity... why is that so?

Can you not run the front end (notebook form)?
Try to open the front end.
That sounds like something I once had when I was running a pirated copy of mathematica 2.0 to try it out. It really sucked. The kernel has limited support for anything, so make sure to always use the front end.

r u positive that it would help if i changed to the notebook/text form? well, i dunno how i culd do that since its nt an authentic copy.

I had exactly the same problem with my unauthentic copy. The front end doesnt work, and neither do any sort of graphics or code editing or anything.

Unless you're okay with just using it in the primitive form you have, I think the only way to deal with it is to get an authentic copy. Its definately worth it; if your a student its only 100$.

i got the same problem too, i now installed Mathematica 6.0 again and it works fine.

For those having the problem mentioned above, please follow the following steps:
Before installing a new version of Mathematica, find the folder %windir%\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Mathematica\Licensing and delete the file mathpass (which holds the registry for previous versions of Mathematica) if exists.
Then, at the end of the installation process you should come a cross with a window asking for the License number.
After that you should enter your MathID, and then here you are!

It worked for me with Windows XP!
Similar solution can be developed for other versions too.

In windows 7, the folder is C:\Users\username\AppData...

I've deleted some files on C:\ProgramData too.

You'll have to enable the view of hidden files to see both folders.

Yup. I deleted the files and folders on the specified locations. And now I can use mathematica normally.

bkarpuz suggests to delete the mathpass.

I've uninstaled, deleted all folders and files on C:\ProgramData and C:\Users\username\AppData.

Btw I'm using mathematica 8, but I guess it's valid for other versions too.
