Is that all it said? If it said something in addition do you think that might be significant?

3. I suspect they may be refering to the fact that matlab operations are not peicewise on each element in the array. ie A^-1 isn't just 1/each_element but rather the inverse of the matrix itself (so I believe anyway).

The matrix is singular to machine precision and I expect M. said so (possibly quoting the condition number) in addition to spiting out the given answer.
