How far apart are the stations?

Let the seperation in miles be $\displaystyle d$, then train 1 takes $\displaystyle t_1=d/50$ hours, and train 2 takes $\displaystyle t_2=d/60$ hours. But you are also told that:

$\displaystyle t_1=t_2+1,$

so

$\displaystyle \frac{d}{50}=\frac{d}{60}+1$
