    footnotes in latex

    I know how to create a footnot using \footnote{text}

    I need to know how to create a footnote so the superscript is not a number, rather a symbol of my choosing.

    Any help? Thanks.

    Code:
    \documentclass[12pt]{article}

    \long\def\symbolfootnote[#1]#2{\begingroup\def\thefootnote{\fnsymbol{footnote}}\footnote[#1]{#2}\endgroup}

    \begin{document}

    \begin{enumerate}
    \item \symbolfootnote[1]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[2]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[3]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[4]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[5]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[6]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[7]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[8]{footnote}
    \item \symbolfootnote[9]{footnote}
    \end{enumerate}

    \end{document}
