1. ## [SOLVED] /chi hangs low

I've had a need for the \chi symbol in a version of tex with a subscript. For some reason the symbol hangs low relative to other symbols, so the subscript does not line up visually in the document. I've been using a "double subscript" to make it work (e.g., \chi_ { _E }; a cumbersome hack. Is there a more elegant approach?

I once had a similar problem, which I dealt with by giving the symbol an invisible superscript, which has the effect of pushing down the subscript. Compare these three, which are respectively \chi_E, \chi_{_E} and \chi^{\mathstrut}_E:

$\chi_E\ \chi_{_E}\ \chi^{\mathstrut}_E$

But maybe my cumbersome hack is just as inelegant as yours.
