Why doesn't this work?....

$f^{-1}(x)= \left \{ \begin{array}{ll} x & \text{if x $\ge$ 0} \\ -x & \text{if x $<$ 0}\end{array} \right$

You need this:

[tex]f^{-1}(x)= \left \{ \begin{array}{ll} x & \text{if x $\ge$ 0} \\ -x & \text{if x $<$ 0}\end{array} \right.[/tex]

The period makes all the difference.
