I found that the extra spaces can be confusing.
They can be removed with: \sin^2\!x + \cos\!x: . $\sin^2\!x + \cos^2\!x$

I tried [tex]\therefore [\math] and [tex]\because [\math] which are actually LaTex code for those symbols but as you can see they don't work here.
