# Thread: Equation not formatting correctly

1. ## Equation not formatting correctly

I know I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what.

1. $\frac{(b^{1/2})^2}{(16b^6)^{1/2}}

= \frac{b^{1/2*2}}{16^{1/2}b^{6*1/2}}

$

The first portion works fine but for some reason the second part $b^{1/2*2}$ will not go directly on top of the horizontal line. Also I have been having difficulty putting the second part of the equation underneath the first part (starting new line) I tried the "\\" but it didn't work for me.

Here's the codes

1. [tex]\frac{(b^{1/2})^2}{(16b^6)^{1/2}}

= \frac{b^{1/2*2}}{16^{1/2}b^{6*1/2}}

Thanks,

2. $\frac{(b^{1/2})^2}{(16b^{6})^{1/2}}
= \frac{b^{1/2*2}}{16^{1/2}b^{6*1/2}}.$

Get rid of the extra line in the middle, and it'll work fine.

As for getting the second part below the first part, are you trying to this on MHF? Or in a regular LaTeX environment? If the latter, I'd recommend looking up the align environment from AMS, I believe. There are other multi-line environments, but that'll get you started. If you're trying to do this on MHF, then end one math environment, skip a line, and start a new math environment. That should do it.

3. Thank you Ackbeet! That was very helpful !

4. You're welcome!
