    \symd?

    Look at what this does. $\displaystyle \symd$ (directly before these parentheses is [tex]\symd[/tex], no spaces, no tabs, no returns. It created the space)

    Now it created the huge space before all of the text. Try it for yourself. Type something, and then put [tex]\symd[/tex] and then see what it does.
