    difference between the two

So I was wondering if anyone could maybe give me some insight on the difference between

    \leq\quad\text{and}\quad\leqslant

or, for that matter, the difference between

    \geq\quad\text{and}\quad\geqslant

I've noticed my textbook seems to more frequently use the latex equivalent of \leqslant and \geqslant, but I wasn't sure if there was a reason for this.

Is there some unspoken math-type formality where the bottom bar should be parallel to the bottom of the less/greater than sign in certain instances, and parallel to the page in others? Or is it just a matter of aesthetic preference?

I know this isn't exactly a Latex question (though it may be a silly question), but I didn't know where else it should go.

    Thanks in advance

There is not any mathematical difference between them.

I think it depends on various countries' typesetting traditions. I believe, I Russia the standard is \leqslant.
