buttons not active

I've just opened a tex file in Winedt 6, and none of the dvi, dvi2pdf etc buttons are active. What do I need to do to make them active? Apologies for what is bound to be a very simple question,

Is there a:

\usepackage[pdflatex]{graphicx}

in the preamble?

I have just opened up the document again, and now all the buttons are live!

At the moment, the package seems compeltely unpredictable to me. I am seeing a Latex expert on Thursday to talk things through. I remain very grateful for your help, Captain Black. I will report back!
