"\lim_{x \to X} f(x)" will produce:

$\lim_{x \to X} f(x)$

4. You need to add \displaystyle so that the subscript shows under the lim sign.

$\displaystyle \lim_{n \to \infty} f_n(x)$
$\displaystyle \lim_{n \to \infty} f_n(x)$

Not with the MHF-LaTeX set up it defaults to displaystyle.
