Thread: Inserting a caret in LaTeX

I'm trying to insert a caret in plain text. But when I just insert the symbol ^ I get an error. I've see many sites that say to escape it with a \ but when I do say \^ followed by some character it just puts the caret over the character. I've also seen some sites say to use \verb*^* but I get an error with that too. Any ideas? Thanks.

In plain Tex you could use \^{}. The braces will ensure that the carat goes over an empty space.
