# Math Help - How do you run the Latex code?

1. ## How do you run the Latex code?

Hi all!

I've JUST started learing to use Latex. I just downloaded Texnic center and typed up my first couple lines of input code and saved the file. Now what do you do? How do you run the code to view the output?

I tried to save it and open it using Adobe reader, but I got an error message

"Adobe could not open 'text..tex' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged"

Thanks for any help!

one way is to just type in the code right in the reply text box

for example the expression \frac{numerator}{denominator}

is the latex code then you highlight it and apply the $\Sigma$ icon resulting in

$\frac{numerator}{denominator}$

in the preview or final post.

I think most here just type it in if you use an editor just cut and paste in

I don't know all the ways to do this but so far its fairly easy

after a while you just store in a library of commonly used expressions
so you don't have to retype long strings of code

it definitly makes things a lot easier to understand

hope this helps.

You need to compile the LaTeX source, there should be a number of buttons on the button bar that will compile to dvi, ps or pdf you need to use one or more of these and then open the output in the appropriate viewer.

4. Don't compile it as a PDF file for starters. There should be a drop-down menu window in the menu bar having LaTex=>DVI, LaTex=>PDF, or LaTex=>PS. Choose the DVI option for now. Now, choose File/New Project/English Advanced/Mathematical Article/ and supply a name for this project, then choose OK. That will create a project file for you. Just see if that file compiles correctly. When it comes up, then press Ctrl-Shift-F5 to build and display it. It will work if the viewer for DVI files is installed on your computer. It's called YAP (yet another viewer). If not, then either you need to get it, or try to compile the file as LaTex=>PDF which will call the Adobe reader to view it but in that case, you won't be able to cross-reference the source code with the output by double-clicking on a word.

Also, sometimes there are problems with files not found or not located where they should be. There are configuration options for identifying where files should be located. If you do all the above and then try to build it, you may receive these types of error messages. If so, you'll need to track down the problem to get it working correctly.
