Thread: Geometry in a Football

Come up with a way to find the area and volume of a football. Include in your answer a way to acquire any necessary measurements without cutting or otherwise destroying the football. Also include all necessary formulas to implement your idea.

Contemplative question. Just want to understand this better. Also don't know which formulas I would use.

For the volume, have you ever heard of Archimedes and his eureka moment? Doesn't need any formulas.

Ok, so I just read the wikipedia for it. If I submerge the football into water and calculate the water displaced will be equal to the volume of the football? Is this correct? How do I find the area?

If we pretend that the football is a sphere, we can indeed use formulas on how to get its area and volume. Remember that both are functions of the radius.

The formulas for volume and surface area of an "ellipsoid" might be more accurate.
