Area of room is $6.5* 6.5 = 42.25 m^2$.

Area of carpet is $5.5 * 5.5 = 30.25 m^2$.

1) Area of border is $42.25 m^2- 30.25 m^2 = 12 m^2$.
2) Total cost of carpet is $6.50 * 12 m^2 = 78$

Total area is 13/2 * 13/2 = 169/4 (42.25).

With border, 5.5 x 5.5 meters since its 1 meter wide.

11/2 * 11/2 = 121/4 (30.25);

Thus, area of border is: total - area with border

169/4 - 121/4 = 12 square meters

2.) 12 * 6.5 = \$78 (total cost of carpet if 1 square meter costs \$6.50).

Try to draw a picture. As you progress through Mathematics, pictures become crucial later on.

Small correction. It's never mentioned that currency is dollar. Infact no currency is mentioned. Maybe it's Euro, Pound, Sheep, Cow...!:D
