Not sure how do solve this word problem

I have a test today in math, and we were given a bunch of practice quizzes with problems that will be related to ones on the test.

This word problem has me stumped... no idea how to solve it.

A hydraulic jack has two cylinders and the mechanical advantage is the ratio of their area. If the cylinders are 3 and 10 inches¸ what force on the small cylinder is necessary to lift a 308 pound weight?

Could anyone help me to understand how to solve this? The other word problems seemed fairly simple, but I have no idea what to do for this one.

    Thanks for any help

First, this is not a geometry problem. Parhaps the closest forum would be algebra.

Now, your problem is known as Pascal hydrolic law: force/area in one cylinder = force/area in the second cylinder.

You should understand the problem as the 308 pounds weight is on the second the cylinder.
