    hyperbola word problem

a nuclear power plant has a large cooling tower with sides curved in the shape of a hyperbola. THe radius of the base of the tower is 80 meters. The radius of the top of the tower is 70 metters. THe sides of the tower are 40 meters apart at the closest point located 150 meters above ground. Find the equation of the hyperbola that describes the sides of the cooling tower. (assume that the center ia at the origin) determin the hight of the tower. (There is a graph that showers the right side of the tower with the coordinates of [highest to lowerst]

    Re: hyperbola word problem

    Hey dlbdlb.

To get you started, the first question I will ask is what the equation for a hyperbola is and how you can "fit" this to the data points you have been given?

(Hint: if you take a slice parallel to the planes of xy, xz, yz, then what do you get for these equations when you fix the other variable)?
