# Thread: Formula for Calculating Area of Cross/Plus Shape

1. ## Formula for Calculating Area of Cross/Plus Shape

Hi people,
I'm currently trying to find a formula for calculating an Area of Cross/Plus Shape
It looks like this : +
It has 12 sides (12 coordinates)
For example
1,2
2,2
2,1
3,1
3,2
4,2
4,3
3,3
3,4
2,4
2,3
1,3

I've tried using this formula:
Area of any polygon (Coordinate Geometry) - Math Open Reference
Is there actually a formula for this?

Hi andylbh,

I wasn't aware of that formula, but it worked out to be 5 when I applied it. Check your arithmetic again.

3. Graph the darn thing: it'll be evident...

I see no reason to use that formula if dealing with THAT type of cross;
simply get length of one side; x = side length; then:
area = 5x^2
