Thread: Convert decimal to fraction of an inch

I am puzzled by this small problem I used to know how to do it but I forgot. For example I have 2.12 inch. I aready know that the number 2 has a value of 2 inches but how about the decimal part? How can I find the nearest fraction of an in. (1/4 of an inch, 1/16 of an in, 1/5 of an inch and so on) to the unity of inch. For this problem I aready know that the answer is 2.12 in. rounded up is close to 2 1/8 in. How about for any other whole number with a decimal or forget the whole number and please help me to convet from decimal to the nearest fraction of an inch.

#1 -- there is no nearest fraction.

Nearest half (1/2), multiply by 2 and round result to near whole number
Nearest fourth (1/4), multiply by 4 and round result to near whole number
Nearest tenth (1/10), multiply by 10 and round result to near whole number
Nearest 16th, multiply by 16 and round result to near whole number
Nearest 64th, multiply by 64 and round result to near whole number

Exanple: (nearest eigth 1/8 multiply by 8) ....... so I I have this decimal (.12) and I want to rounded to the
nearest fraction of an inch I do the following..... .12 times 8 = .96 ??? what is this . 96 telling me in relation to a fraction of an inch? I don't get it,
I already know that .12 is ewuivalent or better say can be rounded to 1/8 of an in. when solving for inches. how that resulting .96 relates to 1/8?

You didn't do this part "round result to near whole number"

0.12 * 8 = 0.96 -- Rounded to the nearest whole number is 1 - Thus 1/8

0.63 * 8 = 5.04 -- Rounded to the nearest whole number is 5 - Thus 5/8

0.42 * 16 = 6.72 -- Rounded to the nearest whole number is 7 - Thus 7/16
